xG 0.45, Two Goals — A Win Beyond Expected Value

Atlético managed five shots. xG of 0.45. 42% possession. If you lined the numbers up on their own, Barcelona had controlled the match at Camp Nou. Barcelona's eighteen shots, 1.21 xG, seven on target, all per FotMob. And yet when it was over, the scoreboard read 2-0 to Atlético de Madrid. They scored twice from chances that fell well below the expected return and kept Barcelona at zero. Atlético produced a win the numbers alone cannot fully explain.

The question raised in the preview was this: what could Atlético bring back to the Metropolitano without breaking and without losing key pieces along the way? The answer came in the form of Diego Simeone's first win at Camp Nou since taking over the club. For Atlético as a club, it also ended a 25-match winless run at Camp Nou that had stood since February 2006. After the match, Simeone reflected on the weight of never having won in this stadium before. He also described Barcelona as one of Europe's elite, alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, and stressed his team's precision in the moments that mattered.

It was the first time Barcelona had failed to score at home in any competition since the Leganés match in December 2024, ending a 40-game scoring run. For Atlético, it was also their first clean sheet in this season's Champions League.

First Half — Balance, Then a Late Break

The match burst into life from the opening minutes. Barcelona lined up in a 4-2-3-1, while Atlético held their shape in a 4-4-2. Barcelona took control early, and in the 18th minute Rashford had the ball in the net from a Lamine Yamal pass, only for it to be ruled out because Yamal had been offside in the buildup.

Still, Barcelona were not the only side threatening. Julián Álvarez drove forward from deep and got a shot away, while Ademola Lookman's effort from the left side of the box was blocked. Giuliano Simeone also sent one beyond the far post. The opening 15 minutes brought chances at both ends, but neither side was able to turn them into a lead.

As Barcelona's pressure grew and a series of corners pinned Atlético deep, the match turned late in the half. Giuliano tried to break through onto an Álvarez through ball and was brought down from behind by Pau Cubarsí. Referee István Kovács initially showed a yellow card, but after a VAR review he upgraded it to a red. The decision was that Cubarsí, as the last defender, had denied a clear scoring chance.

Then came the free-kick. Álvarez lifted it over the wall and into the top-right corner. Joan García threw himself across, but the trajectory had already beaten him. After the match, Álvarez told Movistar: "Yesterday I took five or six free-kicks in training and I don't think any of them went in. But the one that mattered was today." It was his ninth Champions League goal of the season, moving past Diego Costa's eight from 2013-14 and setting a new Atlético single-season club record in the competition.

Not long after that, Barcelona had been hit with both the red card and the goal. The silence that spread across Camp Nou at the halftime whistle marked the turning point of the night.

Second Half — The Clean Sheet Atlético Had Been Waiting For

Hansi Flick made a double change at halftime, taking off Pedri and Robert Lewandowski for Gavi and Fermín López. Down to ten men, Barcelona did not shrink. If anything, they kept pushing.

In the 50th minute, Yamal slid an outside-of-the-foot pass into Rashford, who broke through and fired into the side netting from a tight angle. Two minutes later, Rashford struck a free-kick that Juan Musso tipped onto the crossbar. Barcelona kept coming, and their shots hit the woodwork twice over the course of the match.

Atlético spent long spells defending deep, but Simeone changed the game in the 60th minute. He replaced Lookman and Koke with Alexander Sørloth and Álex Baena. Into the Calderón gave Lookman a 3 and judged his involvement to have been limited. There was a much bigger gap between that view and FotMob's number, but at the very least Simeone clearly felt he had to shift the flow of the match.

In the 70th minute, Griezmann became the starting point of the move and the ball worked its way out to Matteo Ruggeri on the left. His low cross found Sørloth, who had been on the pitch for only ten minutes, and the Norwegian swept it in with his left foot. 2-0. Camp Nou fell silent again. It was also a moment that underlined Griezmann's enduring quality, even with his move to MLS at the end of the season already decided.

Musso finished with seven saves. FotMob gave him an 8.5, the highest rating on either side. The memory of him resisting Barcelona's pressure in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg was still fresh, and this was another night in which he carried Atlético from the back. Their first clean sheet of this Champions League campaign had finally arrived, and its value went well beyond the raw numbers.

A Win Also Defined by Card Management

The meaning of this match cannot be reduced to the two goals. In the preview, the main concern for the first leg was surviving it without losing key players for the return match. Among the starters, Marcos Llorente, Giuliano Simeone, Ruggeri and Robin Le Normand all entered the game one booking away from suspension. Thiago Almada, who came off the bench, was in the same position. One yellow card would have ruled any of them out of the second leg.

Llorente's performance deserves special mention. He got an 8 from Into the Calderón, tied for the team high, and a 7.3 from FotMob. Koke was booked in the 31st minute and came off on 60. That may also have been a decision with the second leg in mind, but at the very least it avoided the risk of leaving him out there on a yellow for too long. Once Koke went off, Llorente dropped into the holding role he had originally been signed to play seven years ago and helped lock down the middle through the closing stages. Into the Calderón even suggested that defensive midfield suits him. He did not lower the quality of his game just to stay out of the book. He got to the ball with his feet, made the play before contact, and saw out the night with both intensity and control. The reassurance that gives Atlético ahead of the second leg is considerable.

Giuliano also came through unscathed. Beyond winning the foul that led to Cubarsí's dismissal, he repeatedly attacked the space behind Barcelona's high line with central runs. Into the Calderón noted that the same kind of central run also appeared in the buildup to Sørloth's goal and suggested it may have been a pattern Simeone had specifically prepared for Barcelona. Ruggeri, too, made it through without a booking, completed the job against Yamal, and preserved his availability for the second leg.

There was still a cost. Dávid Hancko had to come off in the 31st minute after hurting his left ankle on the landing from an aerial challenge. He was later seen on crutches, and his availability for the second leg remains uncertain. Pubill, who replaced him, brought stability to the defense and earned a 7 from Into the Calderón, but he was booked in first-half stoppage time. That yellow means he is suspended for the return leg.

From my point of view, there is still some doubt around Pubill's yellow. It was not entirely clear that the contact even warranted the foul in the first place, let alone a booking. Given that the card ended up ruling him out of the second leg, it is fair to ask whether the punishment matched the moment. Flick also reacted angrily to another incident, saying he could not believe VAR had not intervened when Pubill picked up Musso's goal-kick inside the penalty area with his hand. Questions about officiating were among the few dissonant notes left by the match.

The Defensive Blueprint That Stopped Yamal from Delivering the Decisive Blow

Yamal still made his presence felt. His 8.1 from FotMob was Barcelona's highest rating, and he repeatedly tried to beat defenders off the dribble. The outside-of-the-foot pass that released Rashford in the 50th minute was one clear example of his quality.

But he finished with no goal and no assist. The Guardian's live coverage described his late-game actions as exactly what Atlético wanted, driving into blind alleys and being stopped by the last defender. Yamal kept trying to create openings, but in the final phase Atlético got bodies in the way and held firm. Individual brilliance was still there, but it never became the decisive moment on the scoreboard. That was exactly the shape Atlético wanted the match to take.

At the center of that design was Ruggeri. FotMob rated him 8.0, Into the Calderón gave him 7. He had already been used against Yamal from the start of the second half in the league meeting on 4 April, but this time he played the full match, handled the assignment, and added the assist for the second goal. When Yamal moved wide, Ruggeri followed. When he cut inside, Ruggeri closed the angle. Atlético committed 17 fouls in all, so this was hardly a completely clean defensive display. Even so, the essential fact remains: they did not allow Yamal to decide the tie. Right now, Ruggeri looks like Atlético's strongest option for dealing with him. At the very least, this first leg showed he was the man Simeone trusted most with that job. The same matchup is likely to sit at the heart of the second leg as well.

What Atlético Brought Back to the Metropolitano

Two goals and a clean sheet. Cubarsí's red card rules him out of the second leg. Pubill's accumulation suspension is a blow for Atlético as well. Hancko's condition is still unresolved. Even so, the biggest gain of the night may have been that Llorente, Giuliano and Ruggeri all got through it without the booking that would have ruled them out of the return match.

One more goal from Atlético and the tie would have been all but decided. Even with ten men, Barcelona kept finishing the second half with more of the ball and more shots. Rashford alone had seven attempts in the match. Had Barcelona pulled one back during that spell, the psychological edge Atlético carry to the Metropolitano would look very different. The failure to add a third and the fact that they still kept a clean sheet: the challenge and the reward for the second leg are both contained in those two realities.

With Hancko's condition unresolved and Pubill suspended, the back line will have to be rebuilt. Who plays where is the first question for the second leg. Further forward, Lookman's role is again open to question after he was taken off on 60 minutes. Sørloth needed only ten minutes to make the decisive impact. Whether he starts or comes off the bench will be one of the major debates before the second leg.

After the match, Griezmann spoke about Álvarez's form and said he hoped the Argentine would carry the team all the way to the final. It was a comment full of trust in the team.

The second leg is on Tuesday, 14 April, at the Metropolitano. The winners will face either Sporting CP or Arsenal. The question from the preview was simple: what could Atlético bring back without breaking and without losing too much on the way? On this night, they came close to the best possible answer. One more 90 minutes now remains.

Juan Musso68.5Seven saves and Atlético's first clean sheet of this Champions League campaign. The fingertip stop that turned Rashford's free-kick onto the bar was the standout moment. Into the Calderón was harsher than FotMob, but the highest rating on either side tells its own story.
Nahuel Molina77.4He nearly got caught underneath Rashford early on, though the offside flag spared him. He settled as the match wore on, and Into the Calderón said his display justified Simeone starting him over Pubill.
Robin Le Normand77.0Shifted over to left center-back after Hancko's injury. Into the Calderón called it one of his few truly strong performances this season and praised his determination to let nothing through.
Dávid Hanckon/a6.4Came off in the 31st minute with a left ankle injury after landing awkwardly. Later seen on crutches. His status for the second leg remains uncertain.
Matteo Ruggeri78.0The key figure in Atlético's plan against Yamal and the provider of the cross for Sørloth's goal. Elite-level contribution at both ends.
Giuliano Simeone77.0His central run won the foul that led to Cubarsí's dismissal. Made it through without a booking and is available for the second leg. Into the Calderón suggested those repeated runs behind Barcelona's line looked like a specifically prepared pattern.
Marcos Llorente87.3Played the full 90 on a booking risk without seeing yellow. Into the Calderón praised his work in holding midfield after Koke's exit and said the role suits him. Clean, intense, and controlled from start to finish.
Koke56.4Booked in the 31st minute and taken off on 60. It also worked as a way of avoiding the risk of leaving him out there on a yellow. His leadership remained visible, but the booking clearly restricted him.
Ademola Lookman37.2Into the Calderón took a harsh view and felt his involvement was limited. Replaced on 60. The gap with FotMob is striking.
Antoine Griezmann77.1At least as an Atlético player, this was his final appearance at Camp Nou. His role in the move for the second goal was the clearest reminder of his class. Into the Calderón wrote that the move to MLS feels like it is coming too soon.
Julián Álvarez88.3Scored the opener from a direct free-kick. His ninth Champions League goal of the season broke Atlético's club record. UEFA named him Player of the Match. He also worked tirelessly without the ball in the second half.

Marc Pubill76.2On 31' for Hancko. Brought stability to the back line, but his 45+1' booking means he misses the second leg. The validity of the card remains open to debate.
Álex Baena76.2On 60' for Koke. Passed well from deeper areas, though he was booked on 63'. Into the Calderón felt the deeper role suited him.
Alexander Sørloth77.1On 60' for Lookman. Needed only ten minutes to score the second goal that effectively decided the match. His link-up with Ruggeri on the left was a pattern Atlético have returned to many times this season.
Nico González56.0On 80' for Griezmann. Used on the opposite flank from Yamal. Simply avoiding a red card already counted as an improvement from the weekend league game.
Thiago Almada56.0On 80' for Giuliano. Saw some of the ball in a limited cameo, but did not leave a major mark.
