Hancko Hits the Bar, Lookman Finishes the Job

Girona came out on the front foot. Bryan Gil sent a swerving strike past the far post after five minutes and headed narrowly wide six minutes later. Atlético Madrid set up in a 4-4-2, but Girona moved Ounahi freely between midfield and attack, using Joel Roca on the left to deliver cross after cross.

It was Atlético, though, who struck first. Around the 19th minute, Hancko met a corner with a firm header that crashed off the crossbar. Moments later, in the 21st minute, Griezmann found space inside the penalty area and zipped a low pass across goal. Lookman met it with his right foot and guided it into the net for his fourth La Liga goal since his January arrival. For Griezmann, it was the decisive assist in his final home game.

One of the standout performers was Obed Vargas in central midfield. He won seven ground duels, completed 23 of 28 passes and made three ball recoveries. He was dribbled past on a couple of occasions in the second half, but his speed of thought on the ball and his intensity in duels were enough to make a case for a first-team place next season. Into the Calderón gave him a 7 rating, noting that he "continues to build a case for himself to stay in the first team next year," and this writer agrees.

Oblak's 11 Saves and the Defensive Questions That Remain

On shots, shots on target and expected goals alone, Girona might well have won this match. According to FotMob, Atlético posted an xG of 1.97 to Girona's 2.17. Shots stood at 17 to 25, shots on target at 4 to 11, and touches in the opposition box at 28 to 51. Possession also favoured Girona at 47% to 53%. A team in the relegation zone had no business dominating Atlético to that extent.

And yet three points came home, because Jan Oblak refused to break. According to FotMob and Into the Calderón, he made 11 saves on the night. Two in particular stood out: a pair of blocks on Viktor Tsygankov's powerful strikes, and a late stop on Ounahi that would have changed the result. Into the Calderón rated him 9 and FotMob 8.9. This was more than good form; it was a reminder of how indispensable he remains to this team.

That said, the defence was not stable so much as Oblak was impervious. Le Normand picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute and was troubled throughout by Ounahi's dribbling, earning an ItC rating of just 4.5. Pubill also struggled against Joel Roca's crosses from the left and received the same mark. The backline as a whole failed to hold a high line, and heading into the final matchday and beyond, there are defensive issues that need addressing.

Level on 69 Points With Villarreal, Heading Into a Decider

This win took Atlético to 69 points. Villarreal, beaten by Rayo Vallecano on the same matchday, also sit on 69, with identical goal differences of +22. The official La Liga table, however, has Villarreal in third and Atlético in fourth going into the final round. The meeting at La Cerámica on May 24 will settle third place directly. Since Atlético won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season, a draw would be enough to secure third. Villarreal, by contrast, need to win. Champions League qualification is already in hand, but whether Atlético finish the league in third depends entirely on that final match.

The Decisive Assist on Appearance Number 500

This was Griezmann's 500th match for Atlético Madrid and his final home game at the Metropolitano. He was the man who scored the very first goal at this stadium, on September 16, 2017. According to beIN Sports, his record at the Metropolitano stands at 74 goals in 165 appearances across all competitions, 32 more than the next highest scorer at the ground, Ángel Correa (42).

With his assist for Lookman, Griezmann added another defining moment to his record as Atlético's all-time top scorer with 212 goals. He was involved throughout the match. Gazzaniga denied him early on with a fine save, and he sent another effort just wide in the second half. When a shot from close range off Almada's pass didn't come off, he simply smiled. There was no goal, but as a final 90 minutes in front of his home crowd, it was quintessentially Griezmann.

The Ceremony the Metropolitano Stayed to Watch

After the final whistle, the vast majority of the 64,000-plus crowd stayed in their seats. Teammates and coaching staff formed a guard of honour, welcoming Griezmann back onto the pitch. A video montage of his career highlights played on the stadium screens.

Watching the footage was a reminder of just how much more of a goalscorer the young Griezmann was. When he arrived from Real Sociedad in 2014, he played as a left winger. Under Simeone, his move to a central role unlocked a remarkable eye for goal. In more recent years, while retaining that sharpness, he evolved into a link between attack and midfield, orchestrating the team's play as much as finishing it. The chronological arc of the montage traced the full journey of an attacker maturing over a decade.

When the video ended, the current captains stepped onto the pitch: Koke, Oblak, and José María Giménez, who had been ruled out of the matchday squad through injury. The three of them presented Griezmann with a signed shirt. Oblak said Griezmann "should have won a Ballon d'Or" and revealed that before the match he had told him to "enjoy it as if it were the last." Another member of the group that has been at this club since around 2014 was leaving, and that reality was handed over in the form of a signed shirt.

Then the legends appeared. Gabi sent a message via the screen, while Adelardo, Tomás Reñones, Miguel Ángel Ruiz, Roberto Solozábal, Antonio López, Diego Godín and Fernando Torres gathered around Griezmann on the pitch. Seeing figures who represent different eras of the club's history come together in one place was genuinely moving. The fact that legends like Torres maintain their bond with the club and show up for occasions like this says something about the culture of Atlético de Madrid.

Koke gave his speech wearing the 2014-15 shirt from Griezmann's first season at the club. "Gabi, Juanfran, Raúl García, Diego Costa and Filipe Luís have all left, and now my brother is leaving too." Torres declared that Griezmann was "the best that many of us here have ever seen with our own eyes, that much is clear." Simeone, fighting back tears, said: "You arrived playing on the wing, we moved you to the centre and you became insatiable for goals. Your freshness and joy were contagious to your teammates and took you to the place you deserve." Godín told his friend: "This is the end of the most beautiful chapter, but it marks the beginning of a legend that we will remember and cherish more and more every day."

Finally, Griezmann himself took the microphone. "Everything I'd prepared just went out the window," he said with a laugh, before opening with an apology for his move to Barcelona. "I didn't realise how much love I had here. I was very young. I made a mistake." He moved to his gratitude for Simeone: "Thanks to you, I was world champion. I felt like the best in the world. It has been an honour to fight for you." He called Koke "my favourite chubby guy," drawing laughter, and told him: "You are a legend of this club."

The moment when his family joined him on the pitch was unforgettable. His wife, Erika Choperena, and their four children (Mía, Amaro, Alba and Shai) walked towards him, and the stadium erupted in applause. Griezmann thanked Erika directly: "For supporting me, helping me on my bad days, and putting up with my anger after defeats." The words carried the weight of gratitude for everything his family had given him away from the pitch.

And then the closing line. "I haven't been able to bring home a La Liga title or a Champions League trophy. But tonight means so much more. I'll carry your love with me for the rest of my life." Griezmann walked a lap of the pitch with Erika and his children, and said his final goodbye to the Metropolitano.

Atlético Without Griezmann Starts Now

With his move to Orlando City confirmed, Griezmann has one official match left in an Atlético shirt: the trip to La Cerámica on May 24 to face Villarreal. After that, the man who had recorded a club-record 212 goals by the end of his home farewell will leave Madrid for the last time.

Next season, Atlético will need someone to fill the role Griezmann occupied as the connective tissue between attack and midfield. Baena, who created four chances in this match, is one candidate. Vargas's continued growth in central midfield should widen Simeone's options too. But Griezmann's contribution was never purely tactical. As Koke put it: "In tough times, when people are feeling down, Antoine always shows up with his childlike spirit and lifts us up."

What stays at the Metropolitano is the memory of a night when the vast majority of more than 64,000 people stayed in their seats long after the final whistle. A legend who will be remembered not for trophies, but for love. The full weight of that will sink in once next season begins.
