Where to Sit at the Santiago Bernabéu: A Fan’s Seating Guide

The Santiago Bernabéu is home to Real Madrid, Atlético’s city rivals. Meetings between the two clubs are the Madrid derby, which makes this a ground Atlético supporters may also need to know.

For a first visit, we would choose a central longside block in the first or second amphitheatre. Both goals stay in view, the midfield distances make sense and the players are still close enough for the pace of the match to feel real.

On a tighter budget, check the third amphitheatre on either long side before buying the cheapest ticket behind a goal. It may look less exciting on a seating plan, but the side-on angle gives you more of the match for 90 minutes.

Supporters who want to hear the contact, see the players at close range or sit near the loudest home support should look elsewhere. At the Bernabéu, the best view, the closest seat and the strongest atmosphere are different choices.

Judge the Bernabéu by angle and height

Lateral Oeste is the west long side and Lateral Este the east. Fondo Sur sits behind the south goal, with Fondo Norte at the opposite end. Above the lower Grada and Tribuna sections are the first, second, third and fourth amphitheatres.

Ticket pages may mix Spanish and English labels. The useful questions are simpler: are you side-on or behind a goal, and how far above the pitch are you?

The sector number helps with both, but check the stand name or the seating plan too. Each level, from the Grada Baja at pitch level up to the fourth amphitheatre, has its own numbering. We put these ranges together from the sector numbers we found on Real Madrid’s sales screen and official pages. It is not a complete list of sectors.

Within each level, low numbers tend to be on Lateral Oeste and high numbers on Lateral Este, but this is not a fixed rule, and other sectors in the same range are in Fondo Norte or Fondo Sur. Sector 108, for example, is in the Grada Alta of Lateral Oeste, and 630 is in the fourth amphitheatre of Fondo Sur, by the corner. The official ticket site shortens the level names, as in “TERCERO OESTE 501 - 502 - 503”.

If you want to see which of those sectors are actually available for your fixture, marketplace listings show the sector and row alongside the price. Prices sit above face value, and the away-fan caveats are set out at the end of this guide.

Low behind the goal, an attack towards your end fills the view. You see the forward enter the box and the goalkeeper set himself. Once play moves away, players overlap and the far penalty area shrinks, making off-ball runs and the position of the free midfielder harder to follow.

A little height on the long side takes away faces and some of the sound from the pitch, but the shape of the match remains clear. Real Madrid sells central places in the first and second amphitheatres as hospitality seats with panoramic views. The sales language is polished; the underlying reason is straightforward. That angle is where the ground is easiest to read.

For a first visit, choose the first or second amphitheatre

A central block in the first amphitheatre of Lateral Oeste or Lateral Este offers the best all-round view. The players still look quick and physical, while the opposite touchline and both penalty areas remain easy to see.

The second amphitheatre puts a little more distance between you and the pitch. In return, the spaces between the lines and the full width of the defensive block become clearer. A large price jump is rarely worth paying only to move from the second to the first.

Centrality matters more than east or west

Choose the block nearer halfway before worrying about the name of the stand. An east-side seat near the centre is preferable to a west-side seat near the corner, and the same logic works in the other direction.

For an afternoon kick-off, Oeste can be the better final choice between two similar seats. With the retractable roof open, spectators in Este face west across the pitch and may catch the low sun in their line of sight. Roof position and weather change the picture, so a clearly better central block should still come first.

Fondo Sur and the lower tier are for intensity

The organised Grada FANS RMCF support is based in Fondo Sur. If you want the songs and collective reactions of the home end close by, this is the obvious area to consider.

When Real Madrid attack the goal in front of you, a dribble, a run towards a cross and the stand rising before the finish all feel larger. At the far end, the depth of the pitch works against you and smaller combinations become difficult to read. Fondo Sur is not an even view of the whole match; its value lies in the moments that arrive at your end.

Take some height if you want the atmosphere without losing too much of the far goal. Behind the goal, moving upwards can improve the view more than moving a few rows closer.

A low seat on either long side offers another kind of closeness. You hear more from the pitch and feel the speed of the players, while the action still moves across your field of vision. Choose it because being near the players matters to you, not because the lower tier is automatically the premium football view.

On a budget, start with the third amphitheatre on the long side

Longside seats usually cost more than comparable places at the ends. The third amphitheatre is still the first area we would search when value matters.

Halfway is ideal, and blocks roughly in line with either penalty area can also work well. From this height, the attraction is not facial detail. You can see where a team overloads one flank, how much space opens behind a full-back and whether the back line moves together.

The fourth amphitheatre still gives a complete view of the pitch, although identifying small touches and players at the far end takes more concentration. At a similar price, we would keep the side-on angle in the third or fourth amphitheatre rather than move behind a goal in the fourth. Height makes orientation more important, not less.

Resale listings described only as “Longside”, “Shortside” or a broad category leave out a major part of the decision. A block near halfway and one by the corner can feel very different. Unknown sectors should lower what you are willing to pay.

Atlético supporters should check the ticket conditions first

Away seats at the Bernabéu are sold only through the visiting club, and Real Madrid’s ticket pages for both league and Champions League matches reserve the right to refuse entry to away supporters whose tickets were bought through other channels and are outside the away zone. Check the sector and row before paying

Do not rely on an old seating plan. The renovation changed the roof and parts of the upper structure, including a new fourth amphitheatre on the east side. Diagrams from before the work can still appear high in search results.

Confirm whether the seat is in a Lateral or Fondo, the side of the stadium, the amphitheatre, the exact sector and the row. Those details tell you far more than a broad ticket category.
