Four days after Champions League exit, Atlético lacked the finishing touch

Atlético Madrid's Champions League semi-final journey ended on May 5 in London, a 1-2 aggregate defeat to Arsenal. Just four days later, Simeone's side hosted Celta Vigo at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Champions League qualification for next season was already secured. A league title challenge had long since faded. As Simeone put it in his pre-match press conference: "After what we did this year, it's time to be champions." The focus had already shifted to next season.

That context made this fixture uniquely difficult. How does a team summon full intensity immediately after losing a major objective? Character is tested precisely in these moments. After the match, Simeone acknowledged that the club's goal of Champions League qualification had been met, that the league title was out of reach, that a Champions League final was no longer possible, and that the Copa del Rey had come down to penalties. "We have to manage it because we're human," he said. The coach made no attempt to disguise how challenging motivation had become.

José María Giménez was named in the 4-4-2 starting lineup, his first start in two months. But on 20 minutes he injured his right ankle in a challenge with Borja Iglesias and was replaced by Robin Le Normand. Giménez left the pitch carrying his boots and socks in his hand, a sight that raised the possibility this could be his final appearance for the club. Once again, the match underlined the difficulty of building squad plans around Giménez. This is not a question of ability but of availability.

xG 2.04 to 0.13: dominant everywhere except the scoreboard

On paper, Atlético should have won comfortably. They held 56% possession, outshot Celta 20 to 3, put four efforts on target to Celta's one, recorded 36 touches in the opposition box to Celta's 3, and won 10 corners to none. FotMob's expected goals told the starkest story: 2.04 for Atlético against just 0.13 for the visitors. Failing to score despite those numbers cannot be attributed solely to end-of-season fatigue. The final touch and the final decision simply did not come together.

Atlético attacked from the outset. In the 12th minute, Ademola Lookman collected an Álex Baena pass on the left and struck the bar with his left foot. Antoine Griezmann forced a save from goalkeeper Ionuț Radu in the 28th minute, and Alexander Sørloth drew an acrobatic stop from Radu with an instinctive flick inside the six-yard box on 52 minutes. Then on 57 minutes, Lookman met a Baena cross at the far post from close range but ballooned his effort over the crossbar. Four big chances missed, one shot off the woodwork. Atlético did everything except finish.

Baena was the brightest individual performer. His Sofascore rating of 8.4 was the highest in the match, built on 3 key passes, 2 big chances created and 1.43 expected assists across 69 minutes. Operating centrally but also drifting to the right to find time and space, he repeatedly threaded balls behind Celta's defensive line. There were shades of Rodrigo De Paul in his movement and range of passing. Finding this kind of promise at the tail end of a season carries genuine value.

62 minutes: Celta make the most of precious little

The decisive moment in the 62nd minute began with a Koke pass intercepted in midfield. Celta transitioned quickly and Williot Swedberg played a through ball that split the defence down the centre. Marc Pubill was caught out completely by Swedberg's pass, and Le Normand could not close off the central channel. Borja Iglesias ran through unchallenged and calmly chipped the ball over the advancing Jan Oblak. FotMob assigned the chance an xG of just 0.07. Celta's captain converted a low-probability opportunity with high-precision finishing. It was his 14th league goal of the season, one short of matching his career best from the 2022-23 campaign at Real Betis.

Atlético continued to press forward, but Radu stood firm. The goalkeeper registered 4 saves per Sofascore, with 1.40 goals prevented, and also denied substitute Miguel Llorente (Cubo) with a full-stretch stop from a header. Behind him, Celta's back line put in 39 clearances and 6 blocks, finishing the match with only 3 shots and just 1 on target. Disciplined defending and a single counter-attack. For Celta, it was close to the ideal way to win.

According to beIN Sports, it was Celta's first victory over Atlético since September 2018, and their first at the Metropolitano since June 2007. A rare result in a long-running fixture.

Three matches left to gather material for next season

After the match, Simeone was blunt.

"Let's go back to the word 'finishing.' Today the team once again had three key chances in the first half and three in the second, but couldn't convert any of them. Celta were clinical; Borja finished very well with great clarity and composure. The guys gave it everything they had, and there's not much else to say."

Asked about the challenge of motivation, he continued:

"When you go out to play, you never want to lose, and obviously we'll compete just as we always have. We could have won if we'd been more decisive. We're in a moment where things aren't going our way, unlike when the league started and everything was a disaster. Then the situation changed, we competed well in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, and in La Liga we've maintained the stability needed to qualify for the Champions League for another year. It's about management, staying close to them, and making sure they're ready to compete on Tuesday."

The table shows Atlético in fourth place on 63 points with three games remaining. The gap to third-place Villarreal is five points, and Villarreal have played one fewer match. An overtake is arithmetically possible but realistically remote. Next season's Champions League place is guaranteed after UEFA awarded Spain a fifth slot through the European Performance Spot, so the remaining fixtures matter less for the standings than for building towards 2026-27.

There is Griezmann's farewell, with his move to Orlando City confirmed from July. His displeasure at being substituted on 61 minutes carried the weight of a player who has only one more home match left at the Metropolitano. Simeone disclosed that he had not yet spoken to Koke about his future, leaving that conversation for later. Baena's impact from a central role. Cubo's willingness to take chances off the bench. The ingredients are there. How they are incorporated into next season's plans is the off-season assignment.

How deep into the season can a team stay in the title race? For fans, that question determines how long they can invest emotionally in every matchday. The Copa del Rey final on penalties, the Champions League semi-final battle. This season, Atlético fell short at the final hurdle, but at least they showed us what "within reach" looks like for a sustained stretch. Next season, the hope is that the title race extends all the way to the end of May. For Simeone's declaration that "it's time to be champions" to become reality, refusing to treat these last three matches as dead rubbers would be a good place to start.
