Not pushed back at 11 v 11, saw it out at 11 v 10

2-1 at the Metropolitano. It was 0-0 at the break, and the only first-half shot on target from either side was Güler's effort from range on 40. Koke came on at the start of the second half, and on 49 Giuliano Simeone ran on to Hancko's long pass and was grabbed and dragged down by Huijsen. The referee gave a penalty and a yellow card, but VAR intervened, he went to the monitor and changed it to a red. Grimaldo scored the penalty on 53, and on 59 Giuliano took Kang-in Lee's ball on the right and played a low cut-back that David finished with his left foot. On 89, from a free-kick straight after Romero and Lee had been taken off, Rüdiger headed in Bernardo Silva's cross.

I think Atlético got through the first half without being pushed back. On FotMob's count the first-half xG was 0.18 to 0.16, possession was 55 to 45, and neither side had a big chance. Simeone said: "We controlled the first half very well. They had no goalscoring situations, and neither did we, apart from one from Kang-in that went across goal. We felt the control of the game was ours." In his press conference he was categorical: "eleven against eleven, the team controlled the game; eleven against ten, we won it". After the sending-off the shots were 13 to 2. Leaving aside the goal conceded, the second-half scares came down to 77, when the ball was won off Romero and reached Diomande, whose shot Oblak saved, and Mbappé on 90+3.

Mourinho showed images of incidents involving Romero and Lee in his press conference and argued that there should have been two sendings-off. On Huijsen's red card, he said: "I confess I still haven't seen it." The win lifts Atlético to second on 16 points, five behind leaders Barcelona, with Madrid fourth on 15. Winning the home league derby two seasons running is a first since 1976-77, and a first at the Metropolitano.

Giuliano was competing on the right for the full 90 minutes. On 90+3 he even won the ball off Mbappé

It was Giuliano who won the penalty and Giuliano who played the cut-back for the second. In the preview I had not even mentioned his name. On 49 he got to the ball ahead of Huijsen and was grabbed and pulled down; on 59 he got away down the right and sent a low cross in for David. He was competing on the right for the full 90 minutes, and his 18 ground duels were the most of anyone on either side. Both ItC and FotMob made him man of the match.

He was effective in defence as well. On 90+3 he took the ball off Mbappé inside the box and snuffed out a moment that could have ended in an equaliser. Vinícius was taken off on 54. Simeone said they had been "looking for where we could hurt them, which we knew was down the right", and told DAZN that Giuliano's play "starts to break the game open. We go in front with a man more, and we make the most of the situations where we could see we could hurt them, on that flank, in that depth, where Jonathan's goal came from."

Cardoso tightened up the midfield. Madrid finished with eight shots

Cardoso, my key player in the preview, tightened up the midfield as expected. Mbappé managed only one shot. In Simeone's words, "we controlled almost all the transitions they could have had". Cardoso closed off the passing lanes and was not dispossessed once. He completed 64 of 68 passes and made two interceptions. ItC gave him 7.5, calling it "an under-the-radar afternoon for Cardoso, who showed great anticipation and positioning to close off passing lanes for Los Blancos".

His FotMob rating of 6.7 was on the low side among the starters, and he did not win one of his six duels. His passes into the final third were down to ten from the 17 against Osasuna. Even so, it is fair to say he tightened things up. There were not many moments where he was competing for the ball or carrying it forward; on the day the heart of his job was closing off passing lanes and not giving the ball away. I think that job is one reason Madrid were held to eight shots. What I wrote in the preview, "If Cardoso tightens up the midfield, can Atlético keep hold of the game at home?", is how it turned out.

The midfield shape was different in each half. It started with Pubill at right-back and Llorente in midfield; at half-time Pubill, booked on 35, was replaced by Koke, and Llorente moved to right-back. In 45 minutes Koke completed 62 of 64 passes, and his three chances created were joint most in the team, level with Llorente. Simeone said: "Did you see Koke? Thirty-odd years old, and he doesn't start the game of his life, from when he was a little kid, and the coach doesn't pick you, and he comes on in the second half and tears it up." Pairing Lee with David up front was the right call too. It was in the second half that he stood out: he started the move for the second goal, and his five touches in the opposition box were joint most in the team, level with David.

David has three goals in three league games

David has scored in all three of the league games he has played. Scoring in each of his first three league games after joining is, according to Opta, a first for an Atlético player this century. Simeone calls him "the footballer we went to get" and says: "three games, three goals. Honestly, that puts the competition within the squad in an important place." On 59 he met Giuliano's cut-back in the centre of the box.

Julián Álvarez came on for David on 62. There were boos when the line-ups were announced, and the same again when he came on. He had three shots: the one on 66 was cleared off the line, and his left-footed effort on 90 went just wide to the right. Even so, a little while after he came on, the boos turned to applause. The "score the winner" I wrote in the preview did not come off, but this is a step. Simeone said: "Today Julián tried, and it was hard for him, it was hard for him. We are going to get him back, because he is a decisive footballer for what the club needs", and "when you give what you have, the people love you".

I think the goal on 89 is down to the side that did not score the third. Within a minute from 65, Courtois saved Romero's header from a corner, Julián's shot straight after was blocked on the line, and Hancko's header was kept out as well. Had any one of those gone in, Rüdiger's header would not have mattered. On 89 it was Le Normand, only just on, who lost the header to Rüdiger. But before blaming him for that, there were chances to score.

Now comes the international break. The next league game is Alavés on Saturday 10 October, kicking off at 16:15 CEST, and on Tuesday the 13th Manchester United come to the Metropolitano in the Champions League. Barrios and Sørloth are expected back after the break.
